TODAY'S WORD/PHRASE

MANY A SLIP, 'TWIST THE CUP AND THE LIP': Means that everything is uncertain till you possess it.  The origin of this word is : Anceos, the king of the Leleges in Somas, planted a vineyard and was warned by  one of his slaves that he would never like to taste thereof.  Wine was made from  its grapes and the king sent for his slaves, asking what he thought of his prophecy now .  The slave said, "There is many a slip 'twist the cup and thelop," and the  words were yet scarce spoken when  news was brought that  a bear had burst  into the vineyard and was laying waste the wines.  Up started the king in a fury,  seized his spear and forth to attack the bear but was killed in the encounter.

TODAY'S WORD/PHRASE

PIG-IRON: During melting iron runs off into a channel called a sow.  Its branches are called  pigs; here the  iron cools and is therefore called pig-iron.  The word 'sow' used  here has no connection with  swine but comes from a Saxon word meaning to  'scatter'.  A mere play on the word 'sow' has  served to produce the word pig- ron.   Having sows or sow for the parent channel, it required no  great effort of wit  to make the lateral grooves little pigs.

TODAYS'S WORD/PHRASE

JUGGERNAUT: Juggernaut is used to refer to anything wh ich is ruthless or  causes  needless sacrifice.   Juggernaut is derived from the word 'Jagannath' which means  Lord of the World. Hindu God Vishnu is worshipped in this name in the famous  temple at Puri in India. The car festival of this temple is very famous. Thousands of  people congregate there from all  over India. It is said that  many persons in a frenzy of religious fervour  throw themselves  in front of the wheels of the enormous car as  sacrifices.
