                                    SHAKING HANDS: When we meet friend, we shake hands. The custom dates back to a long period when it was used for different reasons. In those days people shook hands not for reasons of friendship. It was more or less in self-defense. When persons met,they used to grasp each other's weapon hands to prevent them using their weapons. In course of time the custom came to remain, while the danger from weapons gradually stopped. It has now became the most familiar mode of greeting.

TODAY'S WORD/PHRASE

                                 FOOLSCAP PAPER : In olden times paper of folio size had a watermark of fool's head with a cap and bells.  This was very common from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century.  The error is due to a confusion with the Italian name for the paper of that size f ogliocapo which means folio sized sheet.

ESPERANTO Esperanto is a language invented by Ludwig Zamenhot, a Russian doctor in 1887.  There are about  2500 root words in Esperanto and they have been selected from the European languages. More than  4000 books have been published in this language and more than a hundred magazines in this  language.  Frequently International Esperanto Congresses are held at which the Esperanto language  is spoken.
